Alastair Cook

Friday July 18,2008

England lost three wickets in awkward conditions on the first morning of the second Test against South Africa at Headingley.

The tourists' captain Graeme Smith had no hesitation putting England in under heavy cloud cover - and after a murky first session, Alastair Cook, in unlucky circumstances, Michael Vaughan and Andrew Strauss were gone in a total of 70 for three.

First Test centurions Kevin Pietersen (17) and Ian Bell (four) saw the hosts through to the lunch break.
