Charlotte's long-lost dad in desperate plea

CHARLOTTE Church’s long-lost biological father Stephen Reed has begged her to let him back into her life after an estrangement of 20 years.

In a heartfelt plea to his singer daughter, who is expecting her second child by her partner, Welsh rugby star Gavin Henson, he says: “Please get in contact with me – I still love you.”

Computer engineer Reed is desperate to hold his 10-month-old granddaughter Ruby, Charlotte’s first child, in his arms.

“It upsets me very much that I’ve got a grandchild who I don’t know and another on the way, but what can I do?” he says.

Reed walked out on her mother Maria when Charlotte was just two. Her surname was subsequently changed to that of her stepfather, her mother’s second husband James Church who adopted her.

And Charlotte, 22, right, has made it clear she has no plans to renew acquaintance with Stephen or his immediate family.

She says: “They are strangers to me. I don’t know if they are moral. Ignorance is bliss. I’m staying in my own ignorant bubble, right or wrong.”

But Stephen, 44, who lives in a modest terraced house in Cardiff with wife Alison and Charlotte’s half-brothers, his sons Alexander, 16, and Luke, 20, believes that the former Voice of an Angel and now TV presenter may have been brainwashed into thinking he is a bad parent.

He says: “My message to Charlotte is – if it concerns you that much, come and find out what I’m really like. There are some people who are obviously trying to drive a wedge between us and keep us separated. People have told her things about me that are abhorrent.

“There have been very many appropriate points in time when I have tried to get in contact with Charlotte, but they haven’t worked out.

“Obviously, Charlotte only has one side of the story. The truth is, relationships don’t work out and people split up and you either get to keep in contact with your dad or you don’t.”

He last tried to see Charlotte shortly after Ruby was born in September last year. “The reaction I got was, ‘Go away’,” he says. “I was passing by and the intention was just to say hello.

“Gavin’s mother was there – she seemed really nice. But she said she didn’t want any arguments. She went and asked her but Charlotte didn’t want to hear.”

He adds: “When I see photos of Ruby, I see a lot of myself in her. I’m a good dad. I think I would be a good grandparent. I don’t see what the problem is.”
