SCOTLAND IN A SWEAT AS MACEDONIA SWITCH WORLD CUP KICK OFF

By Andy McInnes

Macedonia last night turned the heat up on Scotland by switching their opening World Cup Qualifier to an afternoon kick off when temperatures can reach over 100 degrees.

Boss George Burley is now facing a big sweat to get his Qualifying campaign off to a flyer before he and his side face Iceland in Reyjavik just four days later.

And to make matters worse the Tartan Army are facing a ballot for tickets with more than 3000 expected to travel to Skopje for the September 6 clash and only 1000 briefs likely to be available for sale to them.

The former Yuogslavian state confirmed yesterday that they had changed the start time of the match for the FOURTH occasion after considering '' various elements '' regarding their Gradski Stadium which is currently being redeveloped and has no floodlights.

But last night there were suggestions that the Macedonians had seen how Scotland had wilted in a Friendly against the Czech Republic in the searing heat of Prague on May 30 and had opted to give themselves an advantage for the crucial opener.

Previously the kick off had been scheduled for 3-30pm then 8-45pm after a local TV company offered to install temporary floodlights before they reneged and it was moved back to 5-30pm.

An SFA spokesman said: "We have now had confirmation from Macedonia and FIFA that the match will be a 3pm kick-off local time.

"We also expect to discover very soon how many tickets we will get, although we are hoping for at least 1,000."
