VERSATILE: Behrami has signed for £5 million today

WEST Ham have signed Swiss international Valon Behrami for £5 million today in the first of the Upton Park outfit's major summer signings.

The versatile 23-year-old from Italian side Lazio - who can play at right-back or in midfield - signed a five-year deal with the Hammers after weeks of negotiations.

A delighted Behrami told West Ham’s official website: “It’s my dream come true to play for West Ham and play in the Premier League.

“At last I am able to sign. After the Euro 2008 Championships I spoke to West Ham who had expressed an interest but I had to be sure it was the right thing for everybody.

“I have now made my decision and am looking forward to being part of this side and playing in the English league.”

Behrami - who has 15 caps - was a regular for Serie A side Lazio, playing in all three of the Rome side's matches at Euro 2008.

His move is the first major signing at Upton Park since new technical director Gianluca Nani joined the club in June.

Nani, the former sporting director at Brescia, was brought in to help the Hammers spot emerging talent in Europe - particularly in the Italian league.

The 45-year-old, who helped sign Roberto Baggio and Andrea Pirlo for the Serie B outfit, is thought to have a long list of summer targets for Irons boss Alan Curbishley.

When he joined West Ham, the likeable Nani said: " We want to look at the global market and bring in a young Kaka.

"But we have to keep the tradition of the young English players like Frank Lampard and Joe Cole, who were brought up by West Ham."

Behrami's signing will raise questions over Lucas Neill's future, despite West Ham keen to stress that both Behrami and their captain can play in a number of different positions.
