FAMILIES are to be charged more council tax to pay for removing prisoners’ rubbish.
A change in Whitehall guidelines means refuse from jails will be treated as domestic, not industrial, waste from next year.
That means councils cannot charge the Home Office to take it away.

The estimated cost to each local authority could reach £400,000 and is likely to be higher where there is more than one jail.

Convicted criminals will receive regular bin collections at no cost, leaving council tax payers to foot the bill.
“Meanwhile, law-abiding citizens face the barrage of new bin taxes, cuts to the frequency of bin collections and heavy-handed bin fines from town hall bureaucrats.”
