MOORE’S WORLD CUP SHIRT FOR SALE

Moore’s shirt is on eBay

THE shirt worn by former England football captain Bobby Moore in one of his most famous matches is up for sale.

The legendary defender’s red number six shirt from the epic 1970 World Cup quarter-final against West Germany has appeared on internet auction site eBay.

The piece of footballing history has surfaced in a number of jerseys being sold off by a collector. It is the only one of its kind as Sir Alf Ramsey’s defending champions wore a specially-made lightweight kit to cope with the heat of Mexico where the match was played.

And it has attracted a large amount of interest, with the bidding expected to reach £1,000.

The unnamed seller said the shirt – which has a small tear from the game – is genuine and says he bought it from ex-Derby County player Steve Powell.

The collector revealed 10 per cent of the sale figure will be donated to the Bobby Moore Bowel Cancer Fund.

The jersey will remain in private hands as the National Football Museum does not have the funds to bid for it. A spokesman for the attraction in Preston, Lancashire, said: “We rely on donations.”

The quarter-final, played on June 14, 1970, went down in history for the wrong reasons. England were 2-0 up through goals from Martin Peters and Alan Mullery, then it all went wrong.  Keeper Peter Bonetti – deputising for ill Gordon Banks  – let in a Franz Beckenbauer shot.

Ramsey then inexplicably substituted Peters and Bobby Charlton and soon Uwe Seeler headed the equaliser.

England could not hold on and in extra time, Gerd Muller blasted the Germans through.
