Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met Gordon Brown on Friday

Sunday August 24,2008

A British Free Tibet protester held by the Chinese authorities for three days without charge is to be released and deported on Monday, Downing Street said.

A Number 10 official said that the Chinese authorities had agreed to release mother of two Mandy McKeown following the personal intervention of Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Ms McKeown was arrested on Thursday while filming a Free Tibet protest in Beijing and told that she would be held for 10 days.

Her case was raised by Mr Brown when he met Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Friday.

A Number 10 official said: "She will be released tomorrow. Our consul spoke to the MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

"The MFA have taken notice of the personal interest of the Prime Minister."
