BROWN: ‘Deeply unpopular’

Wednesday August 27,2008

By Macer Hall Political Editor

GORDON Brown received fresh warnings of Labour mutiny last night as a leading trade union demanded change “at the highest level” of the Government.

Leaders of the Unite union urged the Prime Minister to overhaul his administration or face electoral meltdown.

And in a further blow to his dwindling authority, 75 Labour MPs defied Mr Brown by demanding a tax raid on energy company profits.

Two ministerial aides were among rebels backing a left-wing motion calling for the one-off “windfall tax” measure in a signal of the breakdown in party discipline within Labour ranks.

The demands from unions and Labour backbenchers were last night being seen as opening shots in a revolt this autumn aimed at forcing the Prime Minister to quit.

Tony Woodley, general secretary of Unite, said: “This Government’s going into opposition in my view. You can’t carry on with policies which are really yesterday’s policies.

“We’ve got a situation where we’ve got a Prime Minister that’s never been less popular than today.

“We’ve got a Government that’s falling ever deeper down in the polls.”

Behind the scenes, Unite’s leaders are understood to be demanding a radical policy shift to the left in return for saving cash-strapped Labour from bankruptcy.

A leaked memo from Mr Woodley and joint general secretary Derek Simpson warned the party was facing “near wipe-out” at the next general election.

“The union’s concern about the political direction of the Government, as well as the industrial concerns over continued calls for pay restraint in the public and private sectors while inflation busts through the Government’s targets, have been put directly to Gordon Brown,” the memo said.

A senior union source said: “Change at the highest level means just that. You can read what you want into that.”

The pressure follows donations to Labour from Unite – formed through a merger of the Transport and General Workers Union and Amicus –  totalling over £11million.

Mr Brown surprised Labour MPs yesterday by deciding against returning to Number 10 this week.

After visiting the Olympics, he is planning to extend his holiday at his home in Fife.

Officials insisted he was “in charge”. But aides believe he should keep a low-profile until his autumn relaunch next month. They are pinning their hopes on a package of measures designed to ease the financial strain on families.

UNIONS

27.08.08, 4:23pm

HA HA, the unions have a cheek, they have been kisses blair/browns butts for 11 years, now their members are being hit by the the economic down turn, most of the problems caused by this government of 11 years, the members are now realising that the union leaders have supported the government in all aspects of their policies of destroying this country.Members are leaving their unions especially now they realise their leaders have backed blair/brown, blair/brown and the union leaders have betrayed the very people who elected them, i hope they all disappear never to return. the only reason the union leaders are kicking up now is because they are losing membership which means smaller pay increases/expenses for them, they dont care about their members never have done, like this govcernment they only care about themselves.I foolishly voted for blair, no one voted for brown, and i was a union member until i realised they were just as corrupt as this government. Did they kick up when blair/brown robbed peoples pension funds....NO, their pensions never suffered.

CHANGE, UNION TELLS BROWN!!

27.08.08, 1:38pm

In my opinion this is a cover devised by the Labour Party to stop The Unions Themselves from having the Political Levies being investigated got off certain Union Members of a certain large Union over many years to this day who were never evewn given a Rule Book or the vote on whether or not they consented to paying a Political Levie to The Labour Party!!..In my opinion If you never had a Union Rule Book given to you, (then has confirmed a few years ago by Barroness of Scotland,) your contract to that Union was useless,) In my opinion if you pay any such subs/ political to a Union and haven't got a Rule Book; Then In my opinion They and The Labour Party are extracting money off you Illegally surely????
Is because of these facts were being brought out into the Public Domain by myself and others over that last few years why This cloak is now being spread extensively because A certain large Union was gaining subs Political levies off duped members then giving that illegally extracted funding to the Labour Party; also sponsorship "Expenses" to certain labour MP's to get them into Parliament ..So under such unlawful circumstances is The Labour Party a the legitimate Government to run this country??? Did certain Labour MP's get into Parliament Legally???????????
