DESIRABLE: Seaside property sales are on the increase

Tuesday September 2,2008

By Sarah O’Grady Property Correspondent

FALLING property prices have sent Britons rushing to the seaside. Between January and June this year 25,468 householders moved to the coast.

Miles Shipside of property website Rightmove.co.uk said: “The market downturn has resulted in a greater availability of houses in picturesque coastal locations.

“Previously they got snapped up but now are hanging around for longer and the owners are having to consider lower offers.”

The march to the sea is revealed in a study by Royal Mail of more than half a million requests for postal redirection this year.

The Home Movers Barometer study found that Kent, “The Garden Of England”, is the most desirable county, with 4,661 moves into the area. London and Surrey had more people moving in – but also had more people moving out.

Of the top 10 most desirable places to live in the UK, all but one county enjoys a beautiful coastline yet nine of the 10 least desirable regions are located inland.

The Barometer shows how the economic downturn hit the property market. The number of moves in March, April, May and June fell to the lowest levels since 1994.
