Ryan Giggs

Friday September 5,2008

By Peter Edwards

Ryan Giggs has warned Manchester City it will take a lot more than their billions to knock United off their perch.

Giggs has enjoyed a haul of two Champions Leagues and 10 Premier League titles in his career at Old Trafford.

Welsh veteran Giggs, 34, feels the aura created by that sustained success cannot be bought.

And he is adamant that not even the millions of pounds being poured into Eastlands by the

Abu Dhabi United Group, headed by Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, can erode United’s dominance.

“City have the richest owner in the world – but I still see United as the biggest club in the world,” Giggs said.

“United have a status and history that it has taken years to build up. It stretches back to the Busby Babes, to players like Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best. It will be very interesting to see what happens at City, but what we have at United is very special.

“You see it when we go abroad in pre-season, you appreciate how popular United is. That popularity is a result of our history. Money can’t necessarily get you that.”

Giggs believes City’s chances of breaking into the Champions League places will be down to whether manager Mark Hughes can turn Robinho and Co into a unit.

He added: “A lot will depend on players they buy, how quickly they gel and how they handle the attention and pressure.”

Giggs also feels that United’s new boy Dimitar Berbatov will bring a new dimension to his side.

He said: “Berbatov has impressed me. With Louis Saha gone, centre-forward was perhaps the one area we were weak.”
