WALES WON'T FAST-TRACK TEEN RAMSAY

Toshack is going to hold Ramsay back

Friday September 5,2008

By Darren Witcoop

Aaron Ramsey has been warned he may have to wait for his dream ticket into the Wales side after being fast-tracked into their World Cup plans.

Ramsey, 17, could become one of the youngest Welsh internationals by winning a debut cap, as manager John Toshack mulls over his midfield options for tomorrow’s opening qualifier with Azerbaijan.

The emergence of Ramsey since his summer move from Championship side Cardiff to Arsenal has propelled him into Toshack’s thoughts.

Yet Wales assistant manager Dean Saunders believes Ramsey will not be rushed on to the international treadmill on a whim.

He said: “Aaron’s turn will come, that’s for sure. You can forget how young he is sometimes.

“He will play a lot of games for Arsenal this season. He is learning all the time and is certainly at the right place to learn how to pass and move.

“At Arsenal, you have good qualities and he will learn by training with them every day.”

A generation ago, Welsh fans were clamouring for a young Ryan Giggs to be thrown into Terry Yorath’s side. Now history is repeating itself with Ramsey. It is just a matter of when, rather than if, Caerphilly-born Ramsey is plunged into a Wales team already including fellow rookies Gareth Bale, Wayne Hennessey and Ched Evans.

“Sometimes it’s a worry when you put young players in as, if things don’t go well, you lose them because of confidence,” said Saunders.

“The danger is getting hammered and you never see them again. But due to the recent results we’ve had, it has worked out nicely.

“An ideal scenario is a team of 28-year-olds who have learnt from their mistakes, but we’re learning as we go along.”
Saunders admits that victory at the Millennium Stadium tomorrow would lay the foundations for Wednesday’s daunting game against Euro 2008 semi-finalists Russia.

He added: “We have to beat Azerbaijan. Then we will have breathing space to say to the Russians, ‘Come and beat us’.”

Wales have been handed a double boost after Jason Koumas and Robert Earnshaw were passed fit for the Azerbaijan game.

The pair were given the green light to return to training after coming through fitness tests yesterday.
