GAZ SAVOURS RARE STRIKE

Sunday September 7,2008

Goals with his right foot, either foot come to that, are a rarity for Gary Naysmith so it’s no wonder he recalls a vital strike against Iceland so vividly.

And why he would dearly love a repeat performance in Reykjavik this Wednesday.

“That was my best-ever with my right,” confirmed the Sheffield United star, although he struggled to come up with any other that might have provided an alternative.

“I caught it perfectly and it came when I was playing in centre midfield so it was unusual for a few reasons.”

That European Championship tie in 2002 against Iceland had started with Naysmith in an equally unfamiliar left midfield role as then boss Berti Vogts was experimenting as only he could.

But the German was happy to try anything after Scotland had been held to that infamous 2-2 draw with the Faroe Islands in the opening qualifying match. And after an injury to Jackie McNamara the Scots were forced into a further reshuffle as the defender moved into the middle of midfield to accommodate Callum Davidson on the left.

“Maybe it was all a bit of an experiment but it worked,” said Naysmith.

“We put in a terrific performance that day and as I remember it I also set Christian Dailly up for the game’s opening goal.

“We deserved our win then and it would be great to repeat it this week.

“I’m looking forward to going back there because I was with Hearts when we beat IVB Vestmannaeyja  2-0 as well a couple of years before that.

“Hopefully we will be successful again on our return.”

Aside from his own considerable contribution Naysmith, 29, recalled the international in Iceland for one other reason.

“I think it proved a bit of a turning point for Berti,” he said. “We went on to get to the play-offs despite that bad start in the Faroes.

“And I certainly remember the pressure we were under going to Reykjavik after the draw against the Faroe Islands.

“But it worked out OK and we’ll be positive again this time.”

The Scots head for Iceland on Tuesday after having had just one day at home in the last 10.

But the fact they managed even that was a bonus as far as the full-back in concerned.

“I remember once going to Latvia and then straight on to Estonia with the Under-21s and it seemed we were away for a really long time,” he added.

“But this time we got back from Macedonia on Saturday night and met up again on Sunday night which was better.”
