Duchess takes RocknRolla's top spot

The Duchess has knocked RocknRolla off the top of the UK box office.

The Duchess starring Keira Knightley topped UK box office The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley, topped UK box office

The film, starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes, has taken £2.29 million in its first week of release.

Guy Ritchie's gangster movie dominated the UK box office charts at the weekend.

RocknRolla has been described as a return to form by some critics, following the disappointments of Swept Away, starring Madonna, and Revolver.

Knightley has been promoting The Duchess at the Toronto Film Festival following the period drama's world premiere in London.

Fiennes has received rave reviews for his performance as the Duke of Devonshire.

The film's director, Saul Dibb, has played down suggestions that the movie emphasises similarities between 18th Century aristocrat Georgiana Spencer, the Duchess of Devonshire, and her direct descendant, Princess Diana.

Publicity for the film has proclaimed "there were three people in her marriage", echoing Diana's famous claim in a TV interview with Martin Bashir.

The movie, which like RocknRolla opened on Friday, has received mixed reviews.
