O’BRIEN: New venture

Wednesday September 17,2008

By Rolf Johnson

AIDAN O’BRIEN, the record breaking Irish trainer, is set to break new ground if he decides to run Duke Of Marmalade and Rip Van Winkle at Great Leighs in Essex.

O’Brien said: “We are still looking at the Arc for Duke Of Marmalade but should we decide to miss the race then it’s possible we will run him at Great Leighs.

“This is to see how he handles the surface, with the view to running him in the Breeders’ Cup Classic next month.”

The race O’Brien has in mind at Great Leighs takes place on Setember 27.

O’Brien is also toying with the idea of running Rip Van Winkle at the Essex venue.

The colt, who needs a sound surface to show his best, is second favourite for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.

Before George Washington and Galileo ran in their respective Breeders’ Cup races, O’Brien sent them to Southwell for public gallops on the fibresand.
