KARL EYES TOP MARKS

RIGHT ONE: Richard Mullen

Saturday September 20,2008

By Bev Swingell

IT IS 10 years since trainer Karl Burke won the Ayr Gold Cup and his turn may have come around again.

Burke did not just win Scotland’s top race in 1998 with Always Alight, he also saddled the runner-up Daring Destiny.

This time Burke sends out three runners – Aahayson, Confuchias and  Raptor (3.30 Ayr).

Burke’s regular jockey Andrew Elliott plumps for Aahayson, but Richard Mullen could be on the right one with the blinkered-first-time Raptor.

Significantly, his best run this season, when second in a valuable Curragh sprint handicap back in March, came on the only occasion he has encountered heavy going. He will cope much better with today’s very soft conditions than most of his rivals.

Manton trainer Brian Meehan is set for a good day at his local track.

Gallagher (2.35, Newbury) was touched off in a Group One at Deauville on his last outing, form which is by some way the best on show in the valuable Mill Reef Stakes.

Earlier, Nasri (2.05, Newbury) looks the pick of the weights in the nursery, thanks to his recent win over the course and distance from Definightly when the remainder of the field were five lengths and more adrift.
