RASHID RAISES YORKSHIRE HOPES

Yorkshire began the second day of their match with fellow strugglers Sussex at Hove on 84 for six but the promising Rashid helped his side reach 400 for nine declared with an impressive 111.

The 20-year-old leg-spinner has taken 57 first-class wickets this season but underlined his potential with the bat after he brought up his hundred off 174 balls.

Rashid was eventually trapped lbw by Mohammad Sami but only after he shared a ninth-wicket partnership worth 140 runs with David Wainwright, who went on to hit his maiden first-class century with an unbeaten 104.

Matthew Hoggard then trapped Michael Yardy and Carl Hopkinson lbw for single-figure scores while Rashid capped a fine day with the wicket of Ollie Rayner for a first-ball duck to leave Sussex 25 for three at the close.

Leaders Nottinghamshire performed poorly with the bat and lacked penetration with the ball against Hampshire at Trent Bridge to leave the door open for title rivals Somerset and outsiders Durham. Charlie Shreck took the final wicket in the morning to wrap up Hampshire's first innings for 203 but the hosts then collapsed from 172 for three to 211 all out.

Samit Patel (70) was poised to help Nottinghamshire post a big total but he he fell to James Tomlinson who finished with three for 56. Ashwell Prince (57) found little support from the tail as spinner Imran Tahir ran through the lower order to collect four for 55.

Andre Adams removed Michael Carberry (24) but Nottinghamshire's bowlers were unable to take any further wickets as Michael Brown (51 not out) and Michael Lumb (25 not out) took Hampshire to 102 for one at stumps - a lead of 94 runs.

Mal Loye (61) and Luke Sutton (49no) provided the backbone of Lancashire's resistance who frustrated Somerset to recover from 58 for four to reach 248 at Taunton as veteran Andrew Caddick took four for 79. Somerset openers Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer were also removed cheaply before the close to leave Somerset on 66 for two.

And Durham also remain in the title race after Michael Di Venuto (90) and Will Smith (81) helped them reach 289 for six against Kent at Canterbury to lead by 64 runs. Gareth Breese is unbeaten on 46 and he will resume with wicketkeeper Phil Mustard in the morning.
