We'll steal trophies with Robin says Adebayor

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR has warned the Premier League and teams in Europe that Arsenal can “do something special” if his partnership with Robin van Persie is allowed to blossom.

The pair tore apart Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday by scoring two goals each in the Gunners’ 4-0 victory.

Van Persie’s knee and thigh injuries meant he and Adebayor started only 12 games together last season, scoring a combined total of 11 goals.

They have already equalled that tally in the seven games they have started alongside each other this term and Adebayor is now praying injury will not rob him of his strike partner again.

If they both stay fit, Adebayor is convinced he and Van Persie have the fire in their boots to end Arsenal’s trophy drought.

“Robin is a good player and, if he is fit for the whole season, we have a chance to do something special, that’s for sure,” he said.

We have a great partnership up front

“I’m very happy because, at the moment, he’s looking fit, looking great and scoring a lot of good goals. We are just enjoying playing together up front.

“He’s a very good player. I’m using him and he’s using me too. We have a great partnership up front. In our heads we have the same ambition, which is to help this team win something.

“He’s here for that, I’m here for that, so we can do something great. Between us, we can help the team win something. I don’t know if Robin’s absence was a key factor in not winning a trophy last season. It can be yes, it can be no. Yes, because we know that if we had all our squad fit last season we had the chance to win something.

“Robin, Eduardo and Bacary Sagna all got injuries. As soon as these players are on the pitch, it’s not the same game.

“Now we have quite a lot of players ready and fit to play every single game and that’s good for the manager.”

Because of their lack of action together, Adebayor believes his partnership with Van Persie is still a work in progress.

But the duo are benefiting from becoming closer both on and off the pitch. “We are trying to build a telepathic understanding,” said Adebayor. “At the moment, we are trying to create a relationship and, against Porto, we showed quite well that we can do something together.

“Of course there is more to come. He’s just back and we’ve only had six or seven games together. Hopefully, as we go game to game, we will get to know each other better and learn how each other plays better.

“Of course, we are quite good friends. He’s a good guy. He’s not like my best friend ever, but sometimes we go to restaurants together.

“He has a contract with adidas like me, so sometimes we do the publicity for them together. We are quite close, quite good friends. Three days ago, we did an advert together. It was good – two team-mates, two strikers for Arsenal. We were quite happy being with each other in the advert.

“We talk about how we are going to find a solution to different problems. You always have to discuss what you have done well and what you have done badly.

“Those are the things that we start on straight after a game. We will see if we can improve and be even better against Sunderland on Saturday – if we are both selected.”

Despite the fact that he was linked with summer moves to AC Milan and Barcelona, Arsenal supporters continued to back Adebayor and he believes a trophy would be the perfect reward for their loyalty.

“We know that if Arsenal play good football and keep the ball on the ground, we will have good opportunities to win,” said Adebayor, who signed a new contract in August.

“Against Porto we played quite well. We enjoyed ourselves a lot on the pitch and we showed good character and good personality.

“Now we just want to keep on going and see where we stop.

“I don’t have a personal target as my target is to win the championship with this club.

“I love this club and they have given me a lot. I want to win a trophy to thank all the fans and everyone for getting me to where I am today.”
