Fabio Capello last night breathed a huge sigh of relief at the news Wayne Rooney should be fit for England’s World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Wayne Rooney Should be fit for England Wayne Rooney: Should be fit for England

Fears that Rooney would miss the back-to-back internationals with damaged ankle ligaments after limping off during Manchester United’s Champions League victory over Aalborg on Tuesday eased yesterday.

Rooney’s injury was assessed by United’s medical staff and the club are set to issue a bulletin today. But it is understood from sources close to the Rooney camp that the injury is not serious.

While it remains a case of touch and go whether he will be fit for United’s trip to Blackburn on Saturday, he is expected to join up with England next week.

That will come as a huge boost to Capello, who has seen Rooney return to his best form with two goals in his last two games for United – following one for England in the 4-1 win in Zagreb.

But former England star Paul Scholes has not been so lucky. United have confirmed that the midfielder will be out for 10 weeks after damaging the medial ligaments in his knee in Denmark.
