CITY RICHES NOT FOR KUYT FLIERS

By Paul Joyce

Dirk Kuyt has placed Manchester City’s quest for global domination into sharp perspective by claiming none of his Liverpool team-mates would ever be tempted to cash in on the Arab billions.

Liverpool travel to money-flushed Eastlands on Sunday anxious to provide City with another reality check following their recent takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group, which has transformed them into arguably the richest club on the planet.

The mind-boggling finances owner Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan is prepared to make

available to manager Mark Hughes was underscored by the British transfer-record fee of £32.5million paid for Robinho in August.

A wishlist of future potential signings is rumoured to have included Liverpool talismen Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, alongside the likes of Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas.

Kuyt sought to apply a dose of realism to proceedings, however, by maintaining that Liverpool’s

standing means a switch to City would only represent a step down for those currently at Anfield.

“We don’t talk about City much as players, but we know they have a new owner and we know he has got a lot of money,” said Holland international Kuyt, who opened the scoring in Liverpool’s 3-1 Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

“But I don’t think any player from Liverpool would go to Manchester City because Liverpool is a much bigger club.

“Liverpool is Stevie [Gerrard] so of course it would be very difficult to buy him. I don’t think he would ever leave here for City. I don’t know what value you would put on him, but it would be a lot of money.

“So it won’t be easy for City, especially if they want to sign the really big players.

“Of course it’s possible, but if you want ones who are already playing for big clubs, that’s the difficult thing.

“Liverpool is a great club. I’m in my third season here now and I enjoy it every day. I know how big this club is, not only in England but all over the world, and that’s really important for all the players here.”

While Rafa Benitez’s side continue to make serene progress in Europe, the victory over PSV following on from the win against Marseille in their opening Group D game, City will pose a fresh test of their Premier League credentials.

Liverpool are unbeaten this season – they have lost just two of their last 30 matches in all competitions – but Kuyt recognises that the likes of City and Aston Villa have designs on breaking into the top four.

“The gap is getting closer and closer because there are teams with more money in the Premier League, like City and Aston Villa,” said Kuyt, who has not scored in the Premier League for 11 months but has become a regular goalscorer in continental combat.

“But it’s one of the toughest leagues in the world and although teams like them want to get into the top four, the ones already there want to stay there every year. So it will be difficult. We just have to keep going as a team. Next up it’s Manchester City. We want to beat them and get another three points.”

Robbie Keane’s first goal for Liverpool since his £20.3m switch from Tottenham will further inspire Benitez’s side and the Republic of Ireland striker admitted the chance to showcase his trademark cartwheel celebrations at Anfield was the fulfilment of a boyhood dream.

“I’ve dreamed of doing thatcelebration as a Liverpool player since I was a kid. I haven’t done the celebration in a while,” he said.

“At Spurs I only did it on special occasions, and this was a special occasion for me with Liverpool, scoring in an important game. It’s a special night. I can put it back in the box now.

“To score my first goal for the team I supported as a kid and to get a standing ovation when I came off, it was a great moment.

“We’ve made a great start to the season so far. I’ve come to Liverpool to be involved in games like the Champions League and be challenging for honours. It’s early days and we can’t get too carried away, but we’ve made a good start.”
