Many are convinced that modern discipline methods such as “anger-management sessions” are totally inadequate. Today’s survey of 6,162 teachers for the Times Educational Supplement found 20.3 per cent supported “the right

to use corporal punishment in extreme cases”. In secondary schools, the figure rose to 22 per cent.

Nick Seaton, of the Campaign for Real Education pressure group, said: “Corporal punishment is a useful deterrent that teachers should have at their disposal.”

But teaching unions last night rejected such a move.

John Dunford, of the Association of School and College Leaders, said: “Corporal punishment is no longer on the agenda, except in the most uncivilised countries. I am sure that this barbaric punishment has disappeared for ever.”
