SAMUEL: CROWD ABUSE WILL NEVER END

Portsmouth have confirmed they will make an official complaint to the Football Association over the abuse Campbell received during last Sunday's match against his former club, and Hampshire police confirmed on Wednesday they would investigate alleged racist and homophobic insults aimed at the player.

However, Samuel - who was himself on the receiving end of abuse earlier in his career - said: "I don't think it will ever end."

He added: "You are always going to get that minority of people who want to keep going. You try and block it out and continue with your game but I've experienced it myself at international level when I've played abroad.

"You hear it in the crowd and you get used to hearing it, but you shouldn't have to.

"I've definitely got sympathy with Sol. You want to kick out all this abusive language because we don't want it in our game."

Hampshire Police initially said they would report Campbell's case to the FA because it was not possible to make arrests due to the sheer numbers chanting.

However, a spokeswoman said the force had received one complaint about the abuse and that it would be investigated.

Samuel admitted it was difficult to identify individual culprits, saying: "It's hard to signal out one person isn't it? You are going to need plenty of stewards sitting next to people to get them to stop it.

"But I'm sure Sol will deal with it. He's done so in the past and he's big enough and old enough now to get on with his life."
