BUSH SUED OVER NATIONAL PRAYER DAY

President George Bush to be sued over national prayer day

Sunday October 5,2008

The largest group of atheists and agnostics in the US is suing President George W Bush, the governor of Wisconsin and other officials over a federal law designating a National Day of Prayer.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation sued in the US district court, arguing that the president's mandated proclamations calling on Americans to pray violates a constitutional ban on government officials endorsing religion.

The day of prayer, held each year on the first Thursday of May, creates a "hostile environment for non-believers, who are made to feel as if they are political outsiders," the lawsuit said.

The national proclamation issued this year asked God's blessings on our country and called for Americans to observe the day with appropriate programmes, ceremonies and activities.

Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle is named in the suit because he is one of 50 governors who issued proclamations calling for the prayer day. The foundation is based in Madison, Wisconsin.

Shirley Dobson, chairwoman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, and White House press secretary Dana Perino are also named.

The foundation has filed numerous lawsuits in recent years, including one rejected by the US Supreme Court last year that attacked President Bush's faith-based initiative.

The White House and a spokesman for Governor Doyle had no comment on the lawsuit.

BUSH SUED

You couldn't make it up! For those unfamiliar with domicile in the USA, it is often overlooked that the "melting pot" comprises a Bible Belt: a large Catholic population: a large Chinese population: Mennonites:: even an indiginous Native American population - the list is endless.

As far as I am concerned: if San Francisco can be taken over by Gay Rights Day:or N.California by The Hells Angels annual Drag up Pacific Highway: no reason at all why George shouldn't cater to the majoritarian viewpoint!

ONLY IN AMERICA? WELL SPYING ON CITIZENS TO THE EXTENT PLANNED IN BRITAIN WOULD CAUSE A REVOLUTION IN THE U.S.

06.10.08, 12:21am

While you are all concerned about the litigious leanings of the "Yanks," which are reined in by the courts believe it or not and frivolous suits thrown out everywhere, whatever is happening on your watch?

Meaning ... meanwhile back at the ranch or the government and its shadow in Britain. I speak of:

Among other things - spying on telephone calls, mail, etc... "The Ģ12billion identity database at the GCHQ spy centre could even log every website visited by computer users nationwide. Shadow Home Secretary Dominic Grieve said the proposal marked “a substantial shift in the powers of the state to obtain information on individuals”

Substantial shift Grieve? I'd say it's a colossal shift in what has always represented freedom in Britain.

Far from worrying about prayer in the United States you atheists, perhaps you should take a gander at your dwindling freedom, advance towards a police state -- and for heaven's sake pray on it.

PRAYER

They can call any day off what they want as far as I am concerned. Personally as an atheist I think suing the President because he wants a day of prayer is ridiculous but typically American.

ONLY IN AMERICA

05.10.08, 9:36am

Honestly, is there nothing the Yanks wonīt sue someone about? I and my family donīt follow any religion, and feel no better or worse than anyone else. If the believers want a day of prayer let them have it, as long as they donīt start thinking they are better than the rest of us. Religion or lack of it is, to me at any rate, a personal matter, and I canīt stand those people who shout about how great they are because they believe, and who condemn non believers. Is it too much to ask that tolerance on both sides should be observed? Even if only for one day?
