“She hasn’t been as heartbroken since her former boyfriend and fellow actor Rod Steiger died in 2002,” says one. “Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor had been friends for years.

“She liked his honesty and he her sense of humour.”

The glamorous actors should have been cast together in East Of Eden in the Fifties but Newman lost out to James Dean.

A few years later they lit up the screen as Brick and Maggie Pollitt in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (pictured). Both were nominated for Oscars and Baftas.

Actress Madeleine Sherwood, who played Mae Pollitt in the film, said: “When Paul and Elizabeth walked on set, you could hear the intake of breath – they were that beautiful together.”

Taylor has been in touch with Newman’s wife of 50 years, fellow actress Joanne Woodward.

Another Taylor friend, Little Women co-star Margaret O’Brien, says: “Elizabeth is feeling sad that there aren’t many of the greats left. Those who are hanging in there, such as Kirk Douglas and Dorothy Malone, are in some cases pretty frail.”
