Duncan Fletcher: Could return

Tuesday October 7,2008

By Colin Bateman

HAMPSHIRE unveiled former batsman Giles White as their new team manager yesterday but the door remains open for Duncan Fletcher to return to English cricket at the Rose Bowl.

Fletcher has not worked since his sacking as England coach in April last year but has been linked with jobs at several counties including Hampshire, Surrey and Glamorgan.

While White, 36, is set to take over the hands-on role in charge of the first team, Fletcher is negotiating  to join him in an advisory role for next season. Fletcher has been linked with jobs in South Africa, where he lives, and India but has always stated his desire to return to county cricket where he enjoyed success with Glamorgan.

White has been in charge at the Rose Bowl since predecessor Paul Terry left the club in July. He said of his permanent appointment: “It feels great. It has been a long six weeks and things have worked out well.” Under White, Hampshire ended the season strongly, finishing third in the Championship.

Pakistan leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who took 44 wickets in seven Championship games at a cost of only 16 runs each, has re-signed for next summer and former England all-rounder Dominic Cork has moved south from Lancashire on a two-year deal.

Batsman Mark Ramprakash has been suspended from Surrey’s first two championship matches next season and fined £1,500 after admitting to using crude language in a match this summer.
