By Martin Richards

Martin Gleeson has completed his rehabilitation from a betting scandal four years ago by being handed the captaincy of England.

Warringtonís Gleeson, banned for four months in June 2004 for betting against his then club†

St Helens, leads England against Wales in Doncaster tomorrow.

Englandís World Cup skipper Jamie Peacock is rested along with the rest of the tour squadís Grand Finalists, and his obvious replacement Adrian Morley is still recovering from a stomach injury.

It is the first time Gleeson has captained a team at any level and coach Tony Smith said: ìI like to sit back and see who the natural leaders are and he has stepped up to the mark.

ìItís a mark of his maturity and how far he has come. He has had a couple of chequered markers in the past but heís well past that and thoroughly deserves the captaincy.î

Gleeson said: ìItís a real honour. Iíve never done it before but Iíve matured over the last couple of years and I do take a senior role on the training field. I see it as a natural progression and I will relish it.î

Normally a centre, he will play at stand-off tomorrow in another sign of Smithís policy†

of picking players who can fill more than one role.

Smith wants to give those squad members whose clubs did not make the play-offs some game time before England fly to their Gold Coast base on Monday ahead of their opening pool game against Papua New Guinea on October 25.

The rest of the side are seen as a stand-by squad for the World Cup in case of injury.

ENGLAND: Briscoe; Fox, Shenton, Sykes, Calderwood; Gleeson (capt), Myler; Fielden, Higham, McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Hock, Westwood, Purdham. Substitutes: Hodgson, Langley, Griffin, Clubb.
