DENMAN ON THE WAY BACK

Trainer Paul Nicholls

Friday October 10,2008

By Chris Goulding

Denman is back on track for a second Gold Cup despite being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat last month.

“I could not be happier with him,” said his trainer Paul Nicholls yesterday on a sun-drenched morning at his yard in Somerset.

“Everything is now on course for a second Gold Cup. He had a fibrillating heart. It’s something I discussed with Sir Alex Ferguson on Monday. He had similar problems but it has not slowed him down.

“I will give him one run before Cheltenham – the Aon chase at Newbury after Christmas – which should be ideal.”

Kauto Star, the winner of the 2007 Gold Cup and second to Denham in last season’s Gold Cup, is also in good shape. “Look at him,” said Nicholls. “Doesn’t he look fantastic? All being well he runs at Down Royal on November 1. I would like to win another King George with him before we have another crack at the Gold Cup.”

Nicholls gives the Velka Pardubicka in the Czech Republic a wide berth but Ferdy Murphy believes Ivoire De Beaulieu can improve on last year’s fourth-place finish in Sunday’s race.

“He arrived at the track on Wednesday and has travelled over absolutely fantastically,” said the trainer. “His preparation has gone much better this time around – he is a lot straighter. We are very hopeful of a big run.”

Charlie Mann runs Nadover, who was seventh behind Comply Or Die in the Grand National.

“We’ve got a good record in the Pardubicka,” said Mann. “We’ve been first, second and fourth but Nadover is the highest-rated horse we’ve ever taken out there.

“He ran a very good race in the National, and I think he’ll run a big race. Noel Fehily will ride him.”
