Ashley Cole: Booed by sections of the Wembley crowd

Sunday October 12,2008

By John Richardson

ENGLAND skipper Rio Ferdinand launched a stinging attack on the Wembley crowd following the 5-1 win over Kazakhstan last night.

And he was backed in his onslaught by manager Fabio Capello after Chelsea star Ashley Cole was booed for a schoolboy blunder which led to Kazakhstan’s goal.

After a 68th-minute horror pass Cole was subjected to ferocious boos and jeers – perhaps understandably by fans who paid up to £120 for a ticket – from a capacity Wembley crowd.

But an angry Ferdinand said: “It was disappointing to hear Ashley getting booed. When a team-mate makes a mistake you just want to gee him up, tell him to put it behind him and to get on with the game.

“It doesn’t help when the fans start booing that player. Maybe the people who did that should be a bit ashamed now.”

Capello added: “This was a good result and we played well in the second half but I don’t understand why the crowd booed one player.

“Ashley made one mistake. He is an England player and anyone can make a mistake.

“I don’t understand the crowd. It’s very important that the crowd help us and not boo him.

“Apart from that the crowd were very strong for us.”

Frank Lampard joined in the criticism of the boos boys, saying: “It was negative because everyone makes mistakes. Ashley is the best left-back in the world and he doesn’t deserve that.”

But Lampard, a target for fans’ jeers himself in he past, said Cole would bounce back from the barracking.

“Ashley is very strong and he will get on with it,” he said.
