MILITARY PAYS TRIBUTE TO RESPECTFUL RESIDENTS OF WOOTTON BASSETT

THANK YOU: Armed forces paid tribute to the residents of Wootton Bassett yesterday

Monday October 13,2008

By Tom Morgan

THE MILITARY staged a “thank you” parade yesterday for the residents of a town who have paid tribute to more than 100 fallen servicemen.

For the past 18 months they have lined the streets every time a repatriated body is flown back to RAF Lyneham.

In a solemn mark of respect, the people of Wootton Bassett, north Wiltshire, turn out in their hundreds to watch the corteges drive slowly past.

Yesterday the Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Navy showed their appreciation by holding a tribute of their own – a parade and a fly-past.

The ceremony was organised by Mike Neville, station commander of RAF Lyneham, who wanted to recognise the ”amazing” contribution of Wootton Bassett residents.

“It never ceases to amaze me the contribution and respect shown by the people of north Wiltshire,” he said.

“In particular, I would like to make mention of the outstanding efforts made by the townspeople.

“I hope this parade will go somewhere towards recognising the ongoing support of the good people of Wootton Bassett, which is truly appreciated by everyone in the armed forces.”

Residents began lining the streets in April last year after the bodies of fallen service personnel were brought home to Britain through RAF Lyneham.

It is the first town the corteges reach as they travel from Lyneham to the M4 motorway en route to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, where post mortem examinations are carried out.

More than 100 times in the past 18 months residents have dropped whatever they are doing and turned out to watch the Union Flag-covered coffins being driven through their town.

The “thank you” began with a fly-past of a C-130 Hercules transporter based at Lyneham. That was followed by a parade including the Prince of Wales Divisional Band of the Army, the Central Band of the RAF, and the HMS Collingwood volunteer band of the Royal Navy.

Another 102 military personnel lined the streets during the 40-minute parade along the High Street.

The ceremony ended at the Town Hall where Air Chief Marshal Sir Clive Loader, commander-in-chief of Air Command, gave a speech thanking the citizens of the town for their continued honour and support.

Expressing his “sincere gratitude” in an open letter to the town, the head of the British Armed Forces, General Sir Richard Dannatt, said: “In many respects, it is the things that cost nothing that are the ones that are the most important – a friendly greeting in the street, a prayer in church. But the gestures shown by the people of Wootton Bassett surpass these at every level.”

The town’s mayor, Mike Leighfield, pledged the town’s continued commitment to honouring fallen soldiers.

Anne Bevis, of the local Royal British Legion, said: “All we can do is spare a few moments of our lives. They’ve given theirs, so a few moments of ours is nothing.”

MILITARY RESPECT

04.11.08, 5:41pm

its a sad state of affairs that little or no respect is shown to all those men and women fallen or not who put there lives on the line for us,it makes me sad they know when they sign up that the may not ever go home to there familys yet they still go ahead with it. they are trully so brave,if it was not for there courage and bravery then maybe we would not be here today.they not only deserve respect, but more money and a bigger pension, last saturday during the xfactor there was a clip showing these brave soles, one man stood out he had both legs and an arm blown off,i found it distressing but bless his heart there he was just getting on as normal, any amount of money should be theres for the taking
