UK NEWSCOST OF LIVING SET TO PLUNGEWednesday October 15,2008 By Macer Hall Political EditorTHE soaring cost of living is poised to ease up at last with record cuts in interest rates and a drop in inflation.
[> Economists last night predicted that the crippling surge in consumer prices may have finally reached its peak. [>
Inflation could fall below 1 per cent next year and interest rates could hit just 2.5 per cent, according to some City analysts. Their forecasts came despite official figures revealing that prices rose by 5.2 per cent last month, the highest inflation rate for 16 years. [>
In spite of this, the cautiously optimistic outlook was bolstered by further upbeat economic news. Share prices surged again in a widespread recovery after global action to tackle the banking crisis. Shoppers’ spirits were also raised by reports of an expected bargain bonanza in high streets.[>
RETIREMENT: HOW HIGHER INFLATION WILL AFFECT THE STATE PENSION
Rising gas and electricity prices were blamed for the 5.2 per cent leap in the Consumer Price Index, a bigger than expected rise from August’s figure of 4.7 per cent. [>
But economists pointed out that oil prices are tumbling, food prices are set to fall and the slowing economy is likely to dampen inflation further. [>
That would allow Bank of England monetary chiefs to slash the base lending rate without fears of fuelling inflation. Jonathan Loynes, chief European economist at Capital Economics, said: “We expect interest rates to drop to 2.5 per cent or less.” That would be the lowest Bank of England interest rate for 60 years. [>
Mr Loynes added: “Provided that the recent fall in oil prices is sustained, inflation should be back below 4 per cent by the end of the year and then start to drop very sharply next spring. [>
“By the autumn we expect it to have fallen to 1 per cent but it could go lower – and even turn negative – if oil prices fall much further.” [>
Shares continued to recover as the international banking rescue action steadied jittery money markets. The FTSE-100 index rose by 3.23 per cent, although in the US the Dow Jones index fell slightly because of profit-taking. Signs of bargains galore for shoppers emerged as retailers prepared to slash prices to encourage a Christmas boom. Some retailers have cut prices by as much as 70 per cent. [>
Office of National Statistics figures gave a mixed picture of prices rises, but revealed grounds for optimism. [>
They showed that the annual rate of inflation for energy and other household utility bills was 15 per cent last month, the highest level since 1989. Increases in prices for clothes, shoes, toys and games also helped to fuel inflation. [>
But food price rises slowed down for the first time since March, going up by 12.7 per cent in September compared with 14.5 per cent in August. A record global wheat harvest is now expected to lead to a further drop in the rate of food price rises. [>

HEARD ON TONIGHTS' NEWS THE LATEST INSPIRING PIECE OF MR. BEAN NEWS!?
15.10.08, 7:18pm
I remember that old footage of President Kennedy delivering an uplifting speech saying; "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth."......A national goal that pushed technology and boosted the US economy into the world leader it is.
Mr Bean says his government (read; incompetent rabble) will pledge £100 million to retrain an army (an army that grows by the day) of unemployed!!.....to do what you may ask!?..........
to create the next world leading industry that takes the world by storm?
to rally the UK population into achieving the next world milestone that will boost our economy into a world leader?............
NO!........to put insulation into peoples' lofts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.........this man is truly awe inspiring!!!!
He has single handedly inside two weeks;
Turn national debt from 40+% of GDP.........to 100% of GDP!!!
Put the British government into the biggest debt black hole in history!!!
Put the UK public also into the biggest debt black hole in history!!!
.........I would think this policy announcement has single-handedly inspired the UK population to commit mass suicide!

SO VERY DEVIOUS...
15.10.08, 1:49pm
It is so strange that everytime government statisitics are about to be released...for example the unemployment figures are set to rise even further by Christmas.......a story comes out just before that like...* The cost of living is set to plunge*......Why do they presume some people can be so stupid as not to see what is going on?????? All the sweet talk in the world will not prepare Britain for what is going to happen...deep recession....unemployment rising even further.....more problems with immigration.....public services closing due to demands......higher energy prices....food will inevitably rise again...health epidemics...and all the while this government STILL refuses to acknowledge these problems......Britain is a small island and with the wieght of ALL these factors will eventually go under....
