BLASTED: The barrister was on a grouse shoot (PIC POSED BY MODEL)

Tuesday October 21,2008

By Mark Blacklock

A BARRISTER was blasted to death by his own shotgun as he stood in a trailer being towed across a rutted grouse moor.

Stephen Franklin, 58, died from horrific head and neck injuries when the double-barrelled weapon went off at point-blank range.

He was looking for red grouse and had stopped briefly to load the firearm, an inquest heard yesterday.

As he resumed his journey, the gun went off inches from his head.

The father of two was a keen conservationist and a trustee of The Otter Trust on whose land the tragedy happened. He was being towed on the two-wheeled trailer, known as a chariot, on Thornhope Moor, near Frosterley, in Co Durham.

Warden Alan Collingwood, who was with Mr Franklin, said: “I heard the gun and looked round expecting to see a grouse, but it was Mr Franklin who was shot.”

Mr Franklin of Wacton, Norfolk, was an experienced shot but broke guidelines by letting himself be towed by a quad bike, which can tip over easily. The inquest, at Darlington, continues.
