BLAST HERO MARINE GETS GEORGE CROSS

Story Image

HONOUR: Matthew Croucher at the Palace yesterday

Friday October 31,2008

A ROYAL Marine who flung himself on to an exploding grenade to save his comrades was awarded the George Cross yesterday.

Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher, 24, of 40 Commando shielded his fellow servicemen after he unwittingly triggered a trip wire on a night-time mission in Afghanistan.

He miraculously escaped with only severe bruising, his rucksack taking the brunt of the blast.

L/Cpl Croucher, from Birmingham, was presented with the medal – the highest honour for bravery without the enemy present – at Buckingham Palace.

He said: “It’s a great honour but I don’t really think about what I did. When you are in the heat of a gun battle there are always people doing heroic things and they don’t always get picked out. They are just doing their job.”

HEAR, HEAR......MICHAEL_CAMBRIDGE

Well said!

It's a sad reflection of society in general today, when the real heroes are glossed over, whilst some tv celebrity 'nobody', or a footballers latest tattoo is a nationwide media talking point. Considering recent media events, maybe it's time we stop to think about those that really matter, that give so much, and those who have given everything.

Even more so considering the time of year. Ninety years to the year since the guns fell silent on that hell.

Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher....... you and your comrades are a credit to our nation, and I for one Thank You. You will never be forgotten.

INSPIRATIONAL!

Quiet, brave, unassuming, professional. It is people like this who put the 'Great' into 'Great Britain'.

What a contrast the foul-mouthed non-entities who are currently in the news.

Lets hear more of people who actually make a difference and less of the so-called 'personalities'.
