MEMORIES: What is now a Doncaster hair salon was the TV set for Open All Hours

Thursday November 6,2008

By Ian Key

ONE of the nation’s best-loved corner shops is up for sale.

The hairdressing salon is better known to millions as Arkwright’s grocery store in the hit BBC comedy series Open All Hours.

The sitcom starred the late Ronnie Barker as the stuttering shopkeeper, David Jason as errand boy Granville and Lynda Baron as Arkwright’s love interest, nurse Gladys Emmanuel.

Auctioneers hope that the property’s TV screen history will attract plenty of bidders in a street where terraced houses sell for little more than Ł80,000.

The Beautique salon in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, served as Arkwright’s shop for the show that ran from 1976 to 1985 and had 17 million viewers a week at its peak. Film crews moved in for weeks at a time for each series.

The end-terrace became a tourist attraction and survived the threat of demolition two years ago when there were plans to bulldoze and regenerate the area.

Now the salon, with a studio and one-bedroom flat, will go to auction on November 24 in Leeds with a guide price of between Ł120,000 and Ł130,000.

Mrs P the likes of whom's attitude have almost disappeared from this country, an elderly lady with attitude, manners, dignity. An elderly charismatic lady, that would take a brolly to the **** of the likes of Mr ED Balls.
