Flood alert as two weeks' rain falls

BRITAIN was on flood alert last night as forecasters warned further heavy downpours were set to cross the country.

Rain is on the way Rain is on the way

Days of torrential rain have already saturated many areas in a deluge that saw half May’s entire rain fall in just 24 hours. Up to an inch fell on Sunday alone in some parts. At one stage yesterday, 12 areas across England and Wales were at risk of flooding and were being monitored by the Environment Agency.

Last night only three warnings were still in place – on the Rivers Ream Brook, Tern and Upper Teme in the Midlands – but forecasters said more heavy rain today could cause problems on already swollen rivers elsewhere.

Twenty firefighters battled to save a nine-year-old girl trapped waist-deep in mud for two hours after rain turned solid ground in Mistley, Essex, into a mud-pool.
