TWO Royal Marines have been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan.

The pair, from UK Landing Force Command Support Group, died when their vehicle was hit by an explosive device yesterday afternoon.

The Ministry of Defence said the men were on a joint patrol with soldiers from Afghan security forces in the Garmsir district of Southern Helmand at the time of the blast.

The families of both Marines, who served with the Plymouth based 3 Commando Brigade, have been notified.

Commander Paula Rowe, of Task Force Helmand, said: “This is a tragic blow to us all in the task force, but our loss is nothing compared to that of their families and loved ones.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this terrible time.”

Both men were operating as part of Task Force Helmand’s Information Exploitation Group - responsible for gathering information to gain the advantage over enemy forces.

The incident happened at 4.47pm local time but the MoD said the cause of the explosion is not yet known.

Brigadier General Richard Blanchette of the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said: “Our deepest sympathies go out to their family, friends and fellow soldiers.

“Their lives are irreplaceable to all of us who fight for the peace and stability of Afghanistan.”

The deaths bring the total number of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since operations began to 124.

TWO ROYAL MARINES KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN

14.11.08, 12:41am

The latest poll states that 2/3rds of Britains want troops withdrawn. Why does our arrogant government led by Brown ignore the consensus and want to send 2000 more troops next year plus Obama's sending 8000 more - don't we just love them. Their excuse is that it will help British National security, huh!. Paging war with Muslims has only resulted in drastic increase of risks from terrorist actions . This is not democratic behaviour - it should be what the people want. Her Majesty the Queen has got her grandsons in the forces and they will most likely be going to Afghanistan -right, if the Labour government want to war, make them send their progeny out to Afghanistan as conscripts no excuses.
Why do America and England want to kill, kill, kill, all the time. I wish they would keep our noses out of other peoples business. It's nothing to be proud of. It's disgusting and degrading -
