WARNING: Cathy Jamieson

Monday November 24,2008

By Rod Mills

FORMER minister Cathy Jamieson has accused the Scottish Government of “standing idly by” while thousands of families face house repossession.

The Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing has warned more Scots faced losing their homes because they don’t have the same legal protection offered in England and Wales.

And Labour’s former justice minister has called on bank executives to donate their Chrismas bonuses to a fund to help families facing losing their homes.

The Scottish Government has come under fire for refusing to adopt guidelines enacted in England and Wales this week which force lenders and Courts to demonstrate repossession is a last resort. Financial penalties on those who go to court without exploring all other alternatives, and has led to an 11 per cent fall in the number of eviction actions.

Ms Jamieson said: “The SNP’s decision to sit on their hands leaves home owners in Scotland with less protection than those in England and Wales. Nicola Sturgeon’s complacency will lead to more families going through the trauma of repossession.”
