The Prince was joined by Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks and film maker Lord Attenborough among others at the Jewish Free School in Kingbury, north-west London for the ceremony.

The Prince thanked the Kinder – the German word for children – for their “absolutely crucial” contribution to British life and said meeting them made him “incredibly proud to be British”.

About 10,000 children, nearly all of them Jewish, were brought to Britain from Nazi-occupied Europe in 1938.

The decision saved the youngsters from “certain death”, the Association of Jewish Refugees said.

Most of them lost their families in the Holocaust and many chose to remain in Britain after the war.

Yesterday many of them gathered to say thank you to the nation for saving them.

One, German-born Steven Mendelsson, 82, from Sheffield, told the Prince yesterday: “I am more than grateful to the British people. I am very proud to be here.”
