Using his armour plating to form a tight ball to keep him safe is the first skill a young armadillo learns.

But this youngster at Schoenbrunn zoo in Vienna is unlikely to have to worry, as reported by Austriantimes.at.

Perfectly round and born during this year's first winter snow, the tiny creature is nicknamed Snowball.

He has been adopted by newly elected Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann, who has promised to pay his food costs for life.

Snowball is a southern three-banded Armadillo which is the only species of the animal capable of rolling into a ball to give it complete protection from predators.

Zoo keepers say father and son are making good progress - but the pair won't be on show until next year.
