CALDWELL WANTS CELTS TO SMASH BRITISH RECORD

By Gary Keown

GARY CALDWELL has set his sights on smashing ex-Celtic boss Martin O’Neill’s all-time British record of 25 straight league wins.

The Parkhead outfit have pulled seven points clear of Rangers in the SPL championship chase thanks to a great run of 12 consecutive victories.

However, Hoops star Caldwell fears an Ibrox revival and has urged his team-mates to target that phenomenal string of results O’Neill’s side put together on their way to the title in season 2003-04.

He said: “Any record is something you want to try to beat.

“Someone has done it before, which means it is achievable, and we would love to do that.

“During this run we have been on, though, we have taken each game as it comes and we’ve worked hard as a group because of injuries.

“We’ll look at Hibs this weekend, try to get over that hurdle and attempt to kick on from there.

“At the moment, 25 wins is still a long way off, but it would be a fantastic achievement.”

Caldwell knows Celts will have to go to Ibrox on December 27 and win if they are to eclipse O’Neill’s landmark tally of victories.

However, he insists picking up three points in Govan is vital both in terms of the title race and making up for the 4-2 Old Firm loss at Parkhead earlier in the campaign.

He said: “We want to put what happened at Parkhead behind us.

“We feel we were poor on the day, but the scoreline left us hard done-by.

“We want to go there and win to put that right.

“Rangers dropping points has surprised us because they are a great side.

“They have made a few mistakes and we have been lucky enough to punish them for it.

“However, if you are as good as they are, you are going to have to have a run in this league where you win a lot of games.

“We have to be ready for that.

“We’re in a position where we are ahead and we have to maintain that.  We have to keep the pressure on.”
