KILLIE WILL SELL COMBE IF HE DOESN'T AGREE NEW LONG TERM DEAL

Friday December 5,2008

By Mark Sugden

KILMARNOCK boss Jim Jefferies last night insisted he is prepared to cash in on keeper Alan Combe in January rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Combe, 34, is out of contract in the summer and has yet to put pen to paper on a long-term deal that would keep him at Rugby Park. Hibs and Hearts are both keen and could sign him on a pre-contract in January - before picking him up for free at the end of the season.

But Jefferies is desperate to avoid that scenario and has told Combe to commit now or risk being flogged in the transfer window.

He said: "Until we sign him up on a new contract, there will always be speculation. We’ve asked him to make a decision as quickly as possible. Because if he doesn’t sign, someone might come in during the transfer window and you have to then think about the club as well.

"We’ll address that once he makes his decision. The player comes to the end of his contract and then you negotiate with him. That’s exactly what we have done with Alan.

"It’s up to him and we feel we’ve made him a good offer with our resources. I sign players who are out of contract and I have to accept that I can lose them that way.

''It’s a difficulty of managing a club like Kilmarnock."

He added: "Alan has matured in the last couple of years and I think we’ve got the best out of him. We just hope that he makes the decision to stay as he enjoys it here."

If Combe is sold in January, Jefferies will promote deputy Damien Rascle and recall Cameron Bell from his loan spell at Queen of the South.

Meanwhile, he has made landing a striker a priority and revealed he is close to securing the services of a forward on a loan deal.
