Aiden McGeady: Exit

Tuesday December 16,2008

By Andy McInnes

Charlie Nicholas reckons £8m rated Aiden McGeady will have no option but to leave Celtic in the winter transfer window after a second bust-up in four months with Bhoys boss Gordon Strachan.

With Newcastle leading a pack of Premiership clubs and Bayern Munich also waiting in the wings a simmering rift between the Irish international and the Hoops manager erupted in the Parkhead dressing room after the 1-1 draw with Hearts at the weekend.

Strachan criticised mid-fielder Scott Brown and striker Georgios Samaras for their performances in the game before allegedly ''slaughtering'' McGeady who took his punishment then hit back with a verbal volley attacking the manager's judgement.

The row which led to an angry McGeady walking out of the stadium was immediately reported to chief executive Peter Lawwell who yesterday held an inquiry into the incident and consulted club directors over the best course of action to take.

But last night Nicholas insisted that a parting of the ways was the likely solution for McGeady to stop any more dressing room unrest from spilling over in the Title run-in.

''There are always clashes between managers and players after poor results but the difference in opinions between McGeady and Strachan appear to becoming more frequent and more personal.

''There is only ever one winner however in these situations and that is the manager .... as long as he gets the backing of the Board .

''The supporters though won't be happy if McGeady goes over a dispute like this and that in turn would put even more pressure on Strachan to deliver the Title .

''Although Aiden loves playing for Celtic he would have no problem finding another club. I know of at least three who are ready to table bids if they are given any encouragement from Celtic .''

Celtic supporters chief Tommy Dornan echoed some of Nicholas's views adding :'' If the reports turn out to be true then I think all Celtic fans will be desperately disappointed. In a situation like this it is difficult to see any other outcome than the player going.
