WATER THAT HEALS WOUNDS

Water that heals wounds

Thursday May 24,2007

SCIENTISTS have developed a strain of “healing water” which makes wounds clear up more quickly.

The solution has a higher concentration of oxygen, increasing the supply to the wound and reducing the time for cuts to heal by 20 per cent.

The liquid Microcyn, created by  Californian-based Oculus, is undergoing trials in Britain and the US.

Experts believe it will be particularly useful for treating diabetics, whose condition hinders wound recovery by preventing blood and oxygen flow.

Professor Andrew Boulton, of Manchester Royal Infirmary, said: “It does seem promising. Hopefully it will confirm our initial good experience.”

As well as helping to heal injuries, the fluid destroys bugs and microbes in the same way as bleach but does not harm human cells.

Scientists created the compound by the electric-charging of molecules to create “oxychlorine ions”. In one  study, patients treated with the fluid, together with an antibiotic, healed within 43 days. Those who received the standard treatment of iodine plus an antibiotic took 55 days to heal.

The research is reported in New Scientist magazine.
