20,540 WIN APPEALS ON SCHOOL PLACES

Thursday May 24,2007

Thousands of parents successfully forced popular schools to give their children places last year after they were initially turned down, figures show.

Parents in England won 20,540 appeals against decisions not to give school places to their children in 2005-06.

This represented a slight fall in the number of successful appeals from the previous year.

But there was a sharp rise in the number of complaints about primary school admissions, the figures from the Department for Education and Skills showed.

Parents made 14,930 appeals to independent panels against decisions to refuse their children primary school places last year.

This was up from 13,600 a year earlier - an increase of more than 1,300, or about 10%.

And more appeals over primary school admissions were decided in favour of the parents.

The figures showed that parents won 5,390 appeals against decisions to refuse to give primary school places to their children in 2005-06, compared with 4,700 the previous year.

Schools minister Jim Knight welcomed the overall decline in appeals heard by panels - down from more than 59,000 in 2004-05 to 56,590.

He said: "We already know most children get a place at their first choice school and today's figures show that the vast majority of parents are satisfied with the schools their children are admitted to. I share every parent's desire to get their child into the school they want - young people deserve no less."

STOP FREEDOM OF CHOICE

24.05.07, 9:53pm

If a child lives in a certain it should go to the school in that catchment area as it was years ago, if parents are not happy to use that local school then they have the option to use private schools and pay the price. Freedom of choice for schools and hospitals is only for the better off and costs the tax payer extra. Why should a better off person with a 4x4 be allowed to take their children to a school in a better area when the poor have to go local as they can't get to the better schools.

SCHOOLS APPEALS..........

24.05.07, 4:34pm

99% of these appeals are from middle class articulate parents who can generally bully their way in, however nicely. They are usually ambitious string pullers who don't care whether less well off kids suffer by their actions. The entire process should be taken well away from parents and schools need to be more aware of exactly what lengths parents will go to in order to get a decent school for their kids. Sometimes Headteachers are compliant in the deceit. Perhaps the process should be taken away from them too.
