ANCIENT GREEKS' DIY PUBS

Unlike the Romans who seemed to have a public drinking house on every corner, centuries of digging round ruins have yet to discover evidence of a similar evidence among the Greeks.

But several private homes have been found to contain hundreds of drinking cups, far too many for simply personal use.

Other finds include erotic graffiti.

Archaeologists believe that instead of going out to bordellos and taverns, the ancient Greeks simply did it all at home.

Clare Kelly Blazeby, an archaeologist at Leeds University, studied artefacts found in private Greek houses dating from 475 to 323 BC and discovered several had stocks of drinking cups.

She said: "This blows apart everything that people think about drinking in classical Greece. A lot of trade and industry was based within the home."
