Exclusive: Celtic warming to Icelandic kid

ICELANDIC star Aron Gunnarsson has revealed Celtic are battling with Premiership pair Everton and Stoke City to snatch him from English League One outfit Coventry City.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who starred for his country in their 2-1 World Cup loss to Scotland in Reykjavik in September, has made a big impression during his first season at the Ricoh Arena since leaving Dutch side AZ Alkmaar last summer.

He insists he is happy to stay with Coventry as a result of playing regular football, but Sky Blues manager Chris Coleman has admitted he is in no position to turn down major offers for his bright young stars.

Gunnarsson  said: "I know there is interest from various clubs.

"Celtic, Everton and Stoke City are all interested, but I really don't see the point in leaving Coventry.

"I am still young and I get to play a lot here.  That's what counts.

"As far as I know, Coventry are doing okay financially and I don't think they particularly want to sell me.

"I am not playing football for money's sake and I want to prove myself on the pitch, so I am not thinking about other clubs just now."

Coleman stated just a matter of weeks ago that he desperately wants to hang on to wonderkid Gunnarsson, but is realistic enough to know that his board might have different ideas should a serious cash offer be slapped on the table.

Coleman said: "I've no intention of selling Aron.

"We're trying to build a team around our younger boys because they are all of a good age and they are going to get better.

"However, if somebody comes in with a whacking amount of money, I am going to struggle to tell the chairman: 'I want to keep him'.I'm realistic in terms of the transfer market."
