WENGER: told to keep quiet

Friday January 9,2009

GARY MEGSON has told Arsene Wenger to take a look at his own players and stop moaning about Bolton’s physical style.

Bolton manager Megson expects the Arsenal boss to have another go at his men when the sides meet at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow.

Wenger was furious with Bolton striker Kevin Davies for his challenge on Gael Clichy when the teams met in September. But Megson has accused Arsenal of over-reacting after their 3-1 victory at the Reebok.

He insisted Bolton refused to make a fuss when Abou Diaby was sent off for his “shocking” challenge on Gretar Steinsson last season.

Megson said: “Whenever we play Arsenal it seems to be overshadowed by an incident, usually a tackle.

“We didn’t make anywhere near the fuss that would’ve been made by other people when Diaby was dismissed for the tackle on Steinsson. It was shocking.

“We just accepted it and got on with it. There was a tackle that was even worse in that game by an Arsenal player on

El-Hadji Diouf which we didn’t make a great big fuss about. Yet there was a complete furore about the legality of Kevin Davies’ tackle on Clichy.

“It was a firm challenge and he did have to slide in to get it, but his momentum has gone through and caught Clichy.

“We were all worried at the time because people were suggesting that he might have a suspected fracture.

“It was nowhere near that. He trained the following Tuesday.”

Megson is expected to complete a £3million deal to take defender Calum Davenport to the Reebok from West Ham before tomorrow’s game.

Davenport, 26, is keen to make the move north after failing to make an impression at Upton Park.

Bolton have also taken World Cup winner Denilson, 31, on trial.

But Megson will not rush into a deal for the Brazilian, who became the most expensive player in the world when Real Betis paid £21.5m for him in 1998.

Megson said: “The trial came about because an agent contacted one of the staff and asked whether we would be interested in him.

“They have paid their own air fare and their own accommodation. He’ll join in training and we’ll play it by ear.

“Guys like Denilson don’t go on trial as we all know the quality that he’s got.

“He’s obviously found himself in a position where his contract has finished and he can sign for anybody. He’s using that, and it’s no problem at all. But at the moment, he’s with us.

“He won the World Cup in 2002 and he was part of a fantastic Brazil team – but it’s about here and now.

“The trial is about us looking at him and him trying to get a contract somewhere.”
