40 injured during Latvia riots
Government and opposition politicians in Latvia are blaming each other for riots this week that injured more than 40 people in Riga.
Government ministers say opposition lawmakers who organised an anti-government rally on Monday night bear responsibility since they held the protest despite increasing social tension due to a severe economic recession.
Opposition lawmakers accuse the government of incompetence for not providing sufficient security.
The protest drew some 10,000 people and was the largest demonstration since Latvia gained independence in 1991.
The Interior Ministry said that 14 police and more than 30 civilians were injured in the ensuring melee and 106 people were detained.
