ER to be saved?

Medical drama ER has been given a lifeline as fans prepare for the show's final episodes.

Executive producer John Wells is set to pull the life support system on the hit programme this spring (09), but he reveals the series could be saved.

Last year's (08) Hollywood writer's strike gave the drama a stay of execution, and ratings have been steady ever since it was announced the current season would be ER's last.

And now Wells tells TV Guide magazine he's had an offer to revive the series on a rival channel to NBC, which currently broadcasts the weekly show.

Wells, who has already started work on dismantling ER's sets, admits a move to the ABC network is unlikely, but states, "Never say never."

And whatever happens, the planned finale will go ahead - and feature ER stars past and present.

He adds, "I've been crafting an ending for two years."
