ANGER OVER CHANNEL 4 DIANA DOCUMENTARY
Princess Diana
By Martin Evans
THERE was mounting outrage today after Channel 4 TV announced it is to broadcast graphic pictures of Princess Diana dying in the Paris car crash.
The sickening pictures will be shown in a documentary on Wednesday June 6 to mark the run-up to the 10th anniversary of her death.
But the plans have caused a wave of revulsion – and will heap further heartbreak on Princes William and Harry, who have repeatedly called on the media not to publish such upsetting photographs.
One of the pictures shows the dying Princess lying in the wrecked Mercedes while passers-by try to revive her.
Diana can be seen in the footwell of the rear passenger seat as French doctor Frederic Maillez, one of the first on the scene, attempts to give her oxygen. Her face has been blanked out but the pictures will cause shock and disgust among viewers.
A source close to the princes said: “This is another tacky attempt to cash in on the Princess’s memory and will cause further distress to her sons. William and Harry are very upset at these constant invasions of her privacy.”
Last summer an Italian magazine caused worldwide condemnation when it published the same picture of the Princess dying in the crashed car.
At the time, Princes William and Harry expressed their disgust by issuing a strongly-worded statement appealing to other media organisations not to follow suit.
They said: “As her sons, we would be failing in our duty if we did not protect her as she once did us. Therefore we appeal to all forms of media throughout the world to appreciate fully that publishing such material causes great hurt to us, our father, our mother’s family and all those who so loved and respected her.”
This latest breach is bound to anger them as they organise her memorial pop concert for July.
The documentary, called Diana: The Witnesses in The Tunnel, claims to shed light on the confused moments after the crash in which Diana and Dodi Al Fayed were both killed on August 31 1997.
But critics claim that the pictures add nothing to the debate and are yet another attempt by Channel 4, whose chief executive is Andy Duncan, to generate publicity through controversy. News of the latest row comes days after the station was ordered to apologise to viewers over the Celebrity Big Brother race scandal.
More than 45,000 viewers complained to the regulator Ofcom after the channel failed to curb racist bullying of Indian actress Shilpa Shetty in the show.
Diana’s former private secretary, Patrick Jephson, said yesterday that he was “profoundly shocked” and disgusted by the decision to show the pictures.
Lord St John of Fawsley, a close friend of Diana and founder of Sky TV, described Channel 4’s move as shameful. He said: “I think it is terrible and they should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. They certainly shouldn’t be subsidised publicly to follow up such causes.”
The co-founder of the Diana Appreciation Society, Alan Berry, said: “This is not only deeply offensive, distressing and insulting to her two sons, but also to the millions around the world who loved her and care about her memory.”
The documentary makers claim the pictures will help to dispel myths about the aftermath of the crash – such as allegations that photographers hindered paramedics.
A Channel 4 spokesman said the programme, made by the station’s history department, presented the arguments in a considered, responsible and balanced fashion.
“The death of Diana Princess of Wales has been a defining moment in British contemporary history,” he said. “There is genuine public interest in examining how events unfolded in the hour or so immediately after the crash.
“Channel 4 has carefully and sensitively selected the pictures used in the programme. These photographs are an important and accurate eyewitness record of how events unfolded after the crash.
“We acknowledge there is great public sensitivity surrounding pictures of the victims, and those have not been included. In none of the pictures is it possible to identify Diana or any of the victims.
“Only one image shows the occupants of the car after the crash and it has been appropriately obscured to avoid any unwarranted intrusion into their privacy or that of their families. We are confident that when people have seen this film they will agree it is a well-made and responsible documentary.”
A Clarence House spokesman said the princes will not comment – but added: “Princes William and Harry have made their position clear in the past about the publication of pictures of this nature.”
GET REAL

Why all this outrage about something which we haven't seen? Anything which sheds light on what happened in the tunnel is of value - especially if, as Channel 4 says, it shows photographers standing back out of the way (contrary to what we have all been led to believe), and that the faces of the victims are pixillated. And especially given that - 10 years later - an inquest has yet to be held. Such a documentary sounds to be a much more real anniversary recognition of the sad events of 1997 than the pop concert and post-concert party which Diana's sons (or their Windsor advisers) are said to be organizing. And this given that someone as close to Diana as her bodyguard Ken Wharfe has told us that she was in reality a classical music lover. Not to mention her charitable, compassionate, and world changing activities (think of AIDS; think of land mines). A pop concert and booze-up surely diminish Diana's memory far more than any real photographs of what happened in the tunnel can.

"SICKENING?"

The irony that the Daily Express would take the moral high ground on this issue amuses me greatly. I guess when it comes to cashing in on the late princess, when the Express does it it's okay, right?

ANGER AT DIANA DOCUMENTARY
28.05.07, 5:18pm
Channel 4 must be getting desperate to obtain viewers.
They had previously caused controversy at Christmas, showing the veiled Muslim woman as, 'the alternative Christmas message' at the same time the Queens Christmas message was broadcast.
Now, they want to show this distasteful film that is bound to upset Prince William and Harry.
It is a despicable cheap attempt to get ratings, and no doubt many of the new immigrants who show no loyalty to this Country will watch it with glee!
My advice to anyone else is, simply switch channels!

HOW LOW IS LOW?

My goodness, how utterly distasteful! What voyeurism!
Only the most sick-minded person could possibly think of showing the the last moments of somebody's life - those poor poor boys, nobody in the world should have to be subjected to watching a loved one die - absolute torture.
Whatever has happened to decency and morals? Respect and thoughtfullness?
Kindness and love?
Everything today is 'what is the most shocking thing to do?'
I'm still young but feel ancient when I see how rapidly human nature is declining, it is so very very sad.
Anything goes today, bodies have no value and we are literally a world of prostitutes.
