Row as beer hits 1p a pint

A PUB is serving up equal measures of joy and despair after slashing the price of its beer to just a penny a pint.

But pub bosses have been blasted for ignoring the health risks of binge drinking.

Pub-goers can buy a pint of Tetley’s bitter for just 1p for every £1.89 single measure spirit they buy at Chennell’s in Barnsley, South Yorks.

Pub bosses say the idea of their promotion is to help couples of all ages through the economic downturn and insist it is not aimed at young drinkers.

But council bosses and health experts say the move is highly irresponsible – especially in an area beset by chronic health and obesity problems.

Barnsley Council leader Steve Houghton admitted the town was plagued by health problems and claimed encouraging people to drink alcohol for next to nothing was “absolutely ridiculous”.

Last summer Barnsley was named the fat capital of Britain.
