Morrissey wants to retire, not grow old

AS HE approaches his half century, morose warbler Morrissey has surprisingly announced he is ready to retire.

And in what will be seen as a dig at sixtysomething rock stars such as Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Mick Jagger, Morrissey goes on to claim that few rock stars improve with age.

“I assume they lose it because they become satisfied and they achieve everything they ever set out to achieve,” he says. “They’re happy and it doesn’t matter any more. It’s very interesting that it’s very hard to think of anybody who ages and still manages to mean anything.”

The bequiffed singer, who turns 50 in May, says it’s unlikely he’ll still be in the music business by the time he turns 55, declaring: “I think it’s incredibly slim. For heaven’s sake!”

The ex-Smiths front man has been promoting his new album, Years Of Refusal, out this week. Among his keenest fans is Tory leader David Cameron, who has been spotted at concerts and lists The Smiths album The Queen Is Dead as his all-time favourite.

Never averse to a feud, Morrissey has been embroiled in a series of much-publicised spats in recent years. As well as losing a bitter royalties case with former Smiths drummer Mike Joyce, the Mancunian star has been in an ongoing legal battle with NME magazine, following an article highlighting his comments on immigration.

Just recently the singer stunned fans by appearing almost nude to promote his latest release, with only a 7inch record to protect his modesty.
